Jefferson County Health Department Vital Records

The Jefferson County Health Department in Dandridge issues certified birth certificates through the state's VRISM system. Through this system, staff can pull up records for any birth in Tennessee going back to 1908. You do not need to have been born in Jefferson County to use this local office. You must bring a valid government-issued photo ID to get a birth certificate. You also need to show you have the legal right to receive the record. Under Tennessee vital records regulations, birth records less than 100 years old are restricted to certain people. These are the person named on the certificate, a parent listed on it, a legal guardian with proof of guardianship, and the spouse or adult child of the named person. Once a record reaches 100 years old, it becomes available to the public.

The fee is $15.00 per certified copy. Each additional copy at the same visit costs another $15.00. Visit jeffersoncountytn.gov for current hours and contact information before you visit the Dandridge office.

The Jefferson County Clerk's office maintains marriage licenses and other county records. However, the clerk does not issue birth certificates. For birth records, you go to the health department.

Who Can Request a Jefferson County Birth Certificate

Tennessee law under Tenn. Code Ann. § 68-3-205 limits access to birth records that are less than 100 years old. This rule exists to protect personal information. Records 100 years old or more are open to the public.

For recent records, you must be one of the following to receive a certified copy: the person named on the record, a parent whose name is listed on the certificate, a legal guardian with guardianship documents from a court, or the spouse or adult child of the named person. If your main photo ID is unavailable or expired, the health department accepts two items from an alternate ID list. Ask staff in Dandridge what documents they accept if you are unsure.

Note: If a parent is trying to get a child's certificate, that parent's name must appear on the birth record. A parent not listed on the certificate needs to provide additional proof to establish eligibility before a copy will be issued.
