Historical Perry County Birth Records

Perry County has some notable record gaps due to courthouse fires. There were fires at the Perry County courthouse in 1863 and again in 1928. Early county records including some vital records were lost in these events. If you are looking for a birth in Perry County before the fires, the original records may not exist.

Statewide birth registration in Tennessee did not begin until July 1908. Records from 1913 are missing statewide. Full registration compliance across Tennessee was not achieved until approximately 1927. Perry County is a rural county and registration in rural areas was often less complete than in urban counties, especially in the early years of the program. If you are researching a birth in Perry County between 1908 and 1927, the record may exist but may also be missing or incomplete.

Birth records over 100 years old are held by the Tennessee State Library and Archives at 1001 Rep. John Lewis Way N., Nashville, TN 37219. Phone: 615-741-2764. Email: ask@tsla.libanswers.com. The TSLA has digitized some early Tennessee vital records available through the Digital Tennessee births database. The TSLA vital records guide explains what Perry County records are held there and how to find substitute sources for earlier births.

If a birth in Perry County was never formally registered, you can apply for a delayed birth certificate. The process requires substitute evidence such as a census record, baptismal record, or school record. Details are at the Tennessee Vital Records delayed certificate page.

Who Can Get Perry County Birth Records

Tennessee law restricts birth records for 100 years under Tenn. Code Ann. ยง 68-3-205. During that window, only eligible persons may obtain a certified copy. Eligible parties are the person named on the certificate, a parent listed on the certificate, a spouse, an adult child of the registrant, someone with documented legal custody, or anyone with a notarized statement from the person on the record giving permission for the release.

Records older than 100 years become part of the public record and can be accessed through the Tennessee State Library and Archives or through the Digital Tennessee births archive. If you are not eligible to get a current birth record in Perry County, the TSLA may be the right place to look depending on the year of the birth you are researching.
